The right cut and size are crucial to ensure that your clothes fit properly. Especially when buying online, you will come across many international brands with different clothing sizes. This is because there is no uniform international standard. Even German manufacturers base their measurements on specific target groups. The basis for determining the right size for you is therefore your body measurements. We offer you a simple measuring guide on this page. Using this guide, you can use your body measurements to determine which clothing size is closest to these measurements and ensure that your newly purchased garment fits perfectly.
Clothing sizes explained
Whereas around 100 years ago, most items of clothing were cut and made to measure by a tailor to fit everyone exactly, today we mostly use ready-made sizes, which are based on a standard measurement but can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Thanks to this standard, it is possible to produce clothing in large quantities and therefore at lower cost. A distinction is made between the US and European sizing systems, as well as between women's and men's clothing. For some items of clothing, such as shoes, shirts and hats, a separate system applies. We mainly use the European sizing system.
The following formula serves as a guide for the European standard: Clothing size = chest circumference / 2 for men and clothing size = chest circumference / 2 - 6 for women.
- Example calculation for men: 100 cm chest circumference / 2 = 50 clothing size
- Example calculations for women: 88 cm bust measurement / 2 - 6 = 38 clothing size
Men
The European clothing size for men is based on the chest circumference. A distinction is made between normal sizes, short sizes (also known as stocky sizes) and long sizes (also known as slim sizes).
What is a short height?
Stocky men often have the problem that garments that fit in the torso are clearly too long. This build tends to require different proportions than those of a normal size. Reduced sizes are suitable for men with a small stomach or for men who are rather short. The length of the sleeves and back is usually shorter, while the width is significantly larger.
What does slim size mean?
Tall and slim men face the opposite problem: the sleeves and back are often too short and they look as if they have outgrown them. For this reason, long sizes are proportionally longer in the back and arms, while they are cut slimmer in the torso.
Ladies
The European women's clothing sizes assume a height between 164 cm and 170 cm, but there are also short sizes and long sizes for women. However, the Wellington of Bilmore ladies' collection is only available in regular sizes, but we are also happy to manufacture up to size 52. Even if we do not have a large stock here, we are also happy to manufacture larger sizes for you on request.
